Note | Death reg. 005111-09 Toronto, York Co. Eleanor McBride died Oct. 18/09, at 297 Markham Street, age 65. Widow. Physician and informant Dr. D. A. McPherson. This is confirmed by a death notice as posted in The Globe edition of October 19, 1909, which states that she passed away the previous night at 11:00. It also identifies her as the mother of ex-alderman Samuel McBride (Samuel junior). It goes on to tell that she died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Barber, of Markham Street. Beyond this, we have the image of the burial page of Toronto Necropolis Cemetery, as provided cooperatively by the Toronto branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society and Familysearch. This tells that she died on the 18th and was buried on the 20th in section and plot P144, which was owned by the estate of Sam'l McBride. Her husband and her mother- and father-in-law are buried here as well. We know indeed that Eleanor Anderson was the wife of Samuel McBride for this is stated on the death registrations of Samuel McBride Jr., 1936, and Dorothy Sophia McBride Barber who died in 1946. The death registration for Samuel McBride Jr., tells that his mother, Eleanor Anderson, was born in Hoggs Hollow; the death registration for Mrs. Barber tells that her mother was born at Thornhill. Thornhill is in Vaughan Township and is rather west of Hoggs Hollow in North York. The two sites are not far apart with modern highways and cars, but horse-and-buggy-wise they were rather a distance from each other. It is safe to say that the Anderson family moved around in early days. Eleanor's older sister Margaret stated on her marriage registration that she was born in Toronto Township. This is not in the city of Toronto at all, but in present day Peel County, or, more specifically, in what is now the city of Mississauga. The best we may say is that as of the 1851 census (begun in January of 1852) the family was located in Vaughan Township. This is discussed in the notes for Eleanor's father, Andrew Anderson. |
