FatherRobert McBride (1812-1872)
MotherSophia Dale (1815-1895)
BirthSamuel McBride was born in 1839 at Ireland.
MarriageHe married Eleanor Anderson, daughter of Andrew Anderson and Dorothy Fleming
DeathHe died on 9 June 1882 at Toronto, York Co..
BurialHe was buried on 11 June 1882 at P144, Toronto Necropolis Cemetery.
NoteSamuel McBride, age 13, appears with his parents and siblings in the 1851 census in Quebec City. His parents are shown as Robert and Sophia McBride. He has two older siblings, Eliza, age 17, and William, age 15. Of Eliza, for the moment we find no more. This census shows the family as Presbyterian. The older children, Samuel included, as shown as being born in Ireland; the younger children are shown as being born in Quebec.

The 1861 census has the family on Terauley Street, St. John's Ward, in Toronto. The handwriting on this page isn't neat and takes a bit of interpretation, but it's safe to say that this is the Robert and Sophia McBride family. By this time, the oldest child present is Samuel, age 22. The family is shown as Free Church (Presbyterian). The parents, Sam, and his brother Robert are shown as being born in Ireland. The younger siblings are shown as being born in Canada.

Past the enumeration of the 1861 census, Samuel cannot have long remained single, for the 1871 census has Samuel, age 31, with wife Ellen, age 27, still in St. John's Ward of Toronto. They are shown with 5 children, the oldest of whom is Andrew, age 9. The 1861 census was begun on January 4th; the 1871 census was begun on April 2nd. (The age question on the 1851 and 1861 census was: How old are you as of your next birthday? The 1871 and all later censuses was: How old are you now?)

The implication here is that Samuel married 'Ellen' (Eleanor Anderson) at some point fairly early in 1861. A marriage registration has yet to be found. The 1871 does show Samuel and family to be Presbyterian, but, best information found so far is that, per previous census information, the Anderson family was Anglican.

The 1871 census in Toronto (St. John's Ward), shows Samuel and Ellen with five children.

When the couple were married, it was probably in the bride's family's church - Anglican. A record of Samuel and Eleanor's marriage probably exists somewhere, but it will almost certainly be a church record. It certainly does appear that a civil registration of their marriage was not subitted to the county registrar - or it may be that it was, but hasn't survived.

(During the county registration era - approximately 1858 to July of 1869 - clergy were to submit registrations of all their marriages to the county registrar. The one exception was the city of Toronto. They have their own registration records for this era, but so also does York County and we have no way of being certain in which jurisdiction the couple might have been married. These marriages are fairly well indexed and not too difficult to find on Familysearch. Also, both York and Toronto records have been looked at, but, as mentioned, nothing has been found. The clerks in the record offices were mad for such things as check marks on the documentation and these could sometimes create partial obliterations, but these do not appear to have emasculated records wholesale.)

The 1881 census shows Samuel and Ellen, still in St. John's Ward of Toronto, and Samuel is shown as a coal and wood dealer, and this is the last census wherein we find Samuel, for he died in 1882.

By all logic, a death registration for Samuel should have been filed, and may have been, but has not been found. What we do have is the image of the 1882 burial page for Toronto Necropolis Cemetery that shows his date of death and his burial. This shows him as Sam'l McBride, age 42 and some illegible months, born Ireland and died Toronto on June 9, 1882. His burial was on June 11 in Section P, plot 144. The owner of the plot is simply shown as Mr. McBride. The cause of his death is shown as 'inf. of the lungs'. The physician was Dr. McAdam and the officiating minister was Rev. Mr. McCarroll.

(The images of the cemetery pages referred to for the McBrides, unless stated otherwise, are taken from a cooperative work between Familysearch and the Toronto branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, and are to be found on Familysearch.)

Beyond this, there was a story about Samuel's death on page 14 of The Globe, Toronto, Saturday, June 10, 1882, column 1. This is about half way down the page.

Poisoned by a Sick Horse's Breath
Samuel McBride, of 92 Edward Street, died yesterday morning after about a week's illness. A short time since he was asked by a friend to examine a sick horse, and when looking into its mouth inhaled its breath. He immediately, as he said, felt sick, and within a day or two was suffering from typhoid fever, to which disease his death is attributed. The deceased firmly believed that his disease was derived from the horse.

Glanbrook Heritage presents the same story, this being derived from the June 10, 1882, edition of the Hamilton Spectator, and evidently derived from a different source. This describes the death of Samuel McBride of Toronto, a wood and coal merchant. It tells that he 'inhaled poisonous gases from a sick horse' and died after a week's illness. It goes on to say that he was a prominent Mason, Orangeman, and Oddfellow.

Burial information for Samuel goes on to clearly identify him as the son of Robert and Sophia McBride. Robert died in 1872 and was buried in P144 at Toronto Necropolis; Sophia died in 1895 and was buried in P144; Eleanor died in 1909 and she was buried in P144. This last burial shows the plot owner to be the Estate of Sam'l. McBride.

See notes for Samuel's wife Eleanor for what we know, or at the least intuit, of her background.
