ID # 9097, (1866-1936)
Father | Samuel McBride (1839-1882) |
Mother | Eleanor Anderson (1843-1909) |
Birth | Samuel McBride was born on 13 July 1866 at Toronto, York Co.. |
Marriage | He married Frances Jane Whitcombe on 11 June 1890 at 20 Soho Street, Toronto, York Co.. Mrge reg. 014883-90 Toronto, York Co. Samuel McBride, 23, bachelor, salesman, Congregationalist. Born and residing Toronto. Parents Samuel and Eleanor McBride. Frances Jane Whitcombe, 21. spinster, Congregationalist. Born and residing Toronto. Parents Thomas and Emma Whitcombe. Witnesses Dick Cashman and Sarah Jane Hussey, both of Toronto. On June 11th, 1890, at 20 Soho Street, Toronto, York Co. by Joseph Wild, D.D. Emma Whitcombe, Frances' mother, had the maiden name of Cashman, so witness, Dick Cashman, was no doubt a member of the family. Beyond that, at least for a time, Emma Cashman Whitcombe appears to be operating a boarding house at 20 Soho Street. This information is inferred from the list of persons listed in the one household in the 1891 census, but also taken from the Might's Directory for Toronto, 1891. Sarah Jane Hussey appears in both. She may simply have been boarding there or she was a family connection. |
Death | He died on 14 November 1936 at Toronto at age 70. |
Burial | He was buried on 16 November 1936 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto. |
Note | Death reg. 007628-36 Toronto, York Co. Samuel McBride died Nov. 14, 1936, at his residence, 335 Inglewood Drive. Age 70 yrs, 4 mos, 1 day. Born July 13 (Friday), 1866, at Toronto. Gentleman. Retired lumberman. Wife Frances Jane Whitcombe. Parents Samuel McBride, born Montreal, and Eleanor Anderson, born Hoggs Hollow, Ontario. Physician's name illegible, 170 St. George Street. Informant C. R. McBride, 335 Inglewood Drive, son. Burial Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, November 16, 1936. The physician's name, as noted, is illegible, or at least nearly so. 170 St. George Street was a ten storey medical building, mainly accomdating physicians and dentists. Going over a 1935 Might's Toronto directory it does appear that the closest name that resembles the little readable in the signature was that of James B. Hanley. Samuel McBride's father, Samuel Senior, was not born in Montreal, but in Ireland. Most, not all, of his younger siblings were born in Quebec City. Samuel's mother may have been born in Hoggs Hollow. The death registration for his sister, Dorothy Sophia McBride Barber tells that her mother was born in Thornhill. These are not terribly close. See discussion for Samuel Jr's mother Eleanor. Samuel McBride was mayor of Toronto from 1928 to 1929, and again in 1936 for a short time prior to his death late in the year. |
