NoteFor names of children of Amos Merigold and Nancy Cody, as well as dates of birth and some deaths, see notes for Nancy.

Amos and Nancy Merigold were in Burford Township of Brant County per the 1851 and 1861 censuses. The 1851 every person census shows him as Amos Marygould, age 55, born New Brunswick, farmer. His wife Nancy is shown as 47, born Canada West. They have with them 8 children. (Best information is that there were 9.) Son James married in Sarnia, Lambton County, in 1861, and there gave his place of birth as Toronto. This was almost certainly not the Toronto that became the city, but the Township of Toronto in what became Peel County. James' marriage registration also provides the maiden name of Nancy, his mother, as Cody.

We have enough information to safely say that Amos was the son of Thomas Merigold. Amos was certainly in Toronto Township for some years, for he is found on militia lists along with Thomas Merigold Sr. and other evidently Merigold family members. The evidence requires improvement, however, and more will be sought.

See notes relating to land grants for Thomas Merigold, shown here as the father of
Amos.

Beyond this, the 1954 Cody Family book certainly names Amos' parents as Thomas Merigold and Elizabeth Annesley.

An obituary for Amos is to be found in Volume 4, Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, 1861-1870, Rev. Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, Milton (now Ottawa), page 214.

This tells that amos was born in 1795 (1797 was closer to it) near Fredericton and came to Canada with his parents in 1808 and settled in Toronto, and this will be the township. This area now appears to be a part of the city of Mississauga. The obituary goes on to say that he served in the militia as a captain for some years and that he died March 9, 1868. This obituary appeared in the Christian Guardian edition of April 29, 1868, page 72, and the information was forwarded to the Guardian from Burford.
