John George James, 22, bachelor, tinsmith, Episcopal. Born Wales, England. Residing Hamilton. Parents L. W. James and Sarah Philcox.
I. I. Shand, 24, spinster, Presbyterian. Born Canada, residing Hamilton. Parents Warden W. Shand and Elizabeth Kesson.
Witnesses Mifs (Miss) Shand and Mr. Christie, both of Fergus.
On May 22nd, 1872, at the residence of the bride's father, by J. R. Mullan.

The handwriting of the clergyman was likely a problem for the municipal clerk. After examining the clerk's handwriting, he seems to have interpreted the bride's first and middle initials as being the letter I. An examination of later census information and, especially, birth registration information for her children, it's clear enough that her given names were Jacqueline Janet.

Also, John's father is shown as L. W. James. Unmistakeably, he was J. W. James. The error will probably have to do with the registrar's take on the clergyman's handwriting.

The municipal clerk's handwriting is a bit florid and the maiden name of the mother of the bride isn't entirely clear, but, matching it with the Shand gravestone in Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus, we may say that the bride's mother's maiden name was Kesson.
