Warden Warren Shand
ID # 8942, (1816-1891)
Birth | Warden Warren Shand was born in 1816 at Rothsayshire, Scotland. |
Marriage | He married Eliza Kesson. |
Death | He died on 7 August 1891 at West Garafraxa Twp., Wellington Co.. |
Burial | He was buried at Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus, Ontario. |
Note | The burials of Warden Shand and his wife Eliza Kesson appear on a transcription of Belsyde Cemetery by the Wellington County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Interestingly and rather one-off, there is a transcription of Bellside Cemetery, dated 1883. The Wellington County branch of the OGS does include a copy of this in their publications which was recorded by Alexander Dingwall Fordyce. He must have worked for a couple of years to gather the transcriptions for he missed any record of the gravestone of Warden and Eliza. That, or it may be that their gravestone was not immediately erected. It does seem rather likely to have been the former. A caution here. Fordyce, in 1882, also published a transcription of graves in St. Andrew's Cemetery in Fergus. This publication was named The Auld Kirkyard. This does not list the names Shand or Kesson. As mentioned under notes for Eliza, the names of the Shand children are taken from the Canadian census years 1851 thru 1881. There were likely one or two children, born and deceased, for whom we have no record. Burial records for the Shand family, thus found, appear to be limited. The Shand family appears in the township of Garafraxa, Wellington County, as of the 1851 and 1861 censuses. The 1871 is the first which shows the township as West Garafraxa and the Warden and Eliza are recorded as being in West Garafraxa as late as the 1891 census. Warden and Eliza both died in 1891 and their deaths were after the recording of the 1891 census. |
