Sarah Children Philcox

ID # 7874, (1821-1894)
FatherGeorge Philcox (1796-)
MotherMartha Butler (1794-)
BirthSarah Children Philcox was born in 1821 at Canterbury, Kent, England.
MarriageShe married John Wickham James on 10 March 1844 at St. Saviour, Southwark, Surrey, England.
Prior to the record of marriage, there was a double page of a record of the reading of banns for the Parish Church of St. Saviour in Southwark in the County of Surrey.
This recorded the thrice reading of the banns of marriage for John 'Hickson' James, bachelor, and Sarah Children Philcox, spinster, both of 'this parish'. The banns were published on three Sundays, the 18th and 25th of February, and the 3rd of March, 1844, all by S. Benson. Some of the readings had written in the margin the date of marriage, including that of John and Sarah, which was 10 March, 1844. This agrees with the marriage information, below.

NoteA record of baptism for Sarah has not been found. Per census information, she appears to be born in 1821, the same approximate year of the birth of her brother George Philcox Jr.

There is probably more to the story. The 1841 census shows her as a member of the Philcox family, but the only one showing a middle initial, 'C', which quite reasonably doesn't mean much.

But then we have her marriage registration. This shows her father as George Philcox, chronometer maker. Two of the witnesses are her sisters, Susan and Martha. The form has the supposed signatures of the bride and groom, but on this form is almost always the handwriting of the clergyman and that certainly appears to the the situation here. The (supposed) signatures of the bride and groom read as John Wickham James and Sarah Children Philcox. What is unusual is that immediately under the name Sarah Children Philcox is written the name Sarah Children.

The other Philcox children have baptisms. On the surface, Sarah does not. The more reasonable explanation is that she probably does, but under another name. Children?

This is all guesswork and nothing concrete has been found to support the notion that Sarah may have been fostered.

Death reg. 019700-94 Hamilton, Wentworth Co.
Sarah C. James died 4 April, 1894. Age 67. Born England. Eng. Church. Cause of death peritonitis. Physician and informant J. S. McGillivray, M.D.

The death registration shows Sarah's date of death as April 4; her gravestone says April 5. Either may correct. A newspaper obituary or death notice would probably be accurate.
