| Note | See Vol. 6 of Donald A. McKenzie's work, More Notices from Ontario's Methodist Papers, 1858 to 1872, Global Heritage Press, Milton (now of Ottawa) Page 142 cites the Christian Guardian edition of April 19, 1871, page 63. This gives a rather brief obituary for Deborah Howell, the wife of W. H. Howell (M. H. Howell). It tells that she was born in Crowland in November of 1801. Crowland was at the time a township in the Niagara District, later a township in Welland County. This is at odds with her death registration - see below - which places her birth in the United States. Since the 1851 census shows her birth as being in Canada, Crowland is accepted for the moment. See page 517 of Warner & Beers 1883 History of the County of Brant. This has a biography for Wesley Howell, son of Moses Hazen Howell and Deborah Wilson. The biography gives quite a family background for Wesley, including Deborah's family. Deborah's mother is not directly mentioned, but her father is shown as Obed Wilson, a Quaker. This in turn takes us to page 243 of Volume 1 of Ancaster's Heritage. Mrs. William K. Dunham writes something of the history of lot 14 on the 2nd concession of Ancaster. She tells that the original Crown Grant was to Hon. Robert Hamilton, but that Hamilton's executors sold the south half of the lot to Obed Wilson in 1813. She goes on to say that Obed had come to Ancaster and settled on the lot in 1804, purchasing the portion mentioned in 1813. A documentary source for his earlyier settlement is not given. Mrs. Dunham shows Obed's wife as Hannah Fastbinder - the name is variously spelled - and goes on to name the children of Obed and Hannah. These are shown as: Anna, born in 1799 Deborah 1801 Ruth 1804 Sarah 1806 Hannah 1808 Obed 1811 Levi 1813 Philip 1815 Rachel 1817 Peter 1819 and a son who died at birth. These names will be added as evidence accrues. |
