Note | A death registration for Matilda has not been found. We may say, however, that John and Matilda left Canada shortly after their marriage. A male child was born to John and Matilda McRoberts in Bay City, Michigan, on (apparently) December 28th, 1870, and lived but one day, dying on the 29th. No name or cause of death for the child is given. (Find-a-Grave tells that his name was John.) The parents are shown as John B. and Matilda McRoberts. The 1880 U. S. census shows John B. McRoberts, lumberman, age 33, born Ontario, and his wife Matilda, age 28, born Ontario. They reside in Tawas, Michigan. With them is a daughter, Ida E., age 7, born Michigan. Ida was married in 1897 and her marriage registration shows her parents as John B. McRoberts and Matilda J. Baptie. Ida would have been born in approximately 1873. There is also a record of a death for a daughter named Josie. She died at Bay City on July 15th, 1875, at age 9 months. Find-a-Grave tells that she is buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Bay City. No other record for children for John and Matilda has been found. The 1890 U.S. census was destroyed by fire and while some fragments have survived, nothing has been found for the McRoberts family. How John came to be in Toronto when he died in 1891 is unknown to us. We only know of Matilda's date of death, 14 February, 1890, for it appears as such on her gravestone in St. George Cemetery. |
