Gore District Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev'd. Smith (Baptist)

David Babtie and Jane Van Every, both of Dumfries, on July 24, 1849. Witnesses Charles Van Every and Richard Green.

Rev'd. Smith's affiliation, Baptist, is written in, apparently after the fact. This is probably correct, but numbers of records have been annotated like this and care should be taken.

David's name is spelled as 'Babtie'. This does crop up, here and there. Jane's first name is written rather poorly, but later census information shows her to be Jane.

DeathHe died on 24 June 1896 at South Dumfries Twp., Brant Co..
BurialHe was buried at Old Pioneer Presbyterian Cemetery, St. George, South Dumfries.
NoteDavid Baptie is shown as a resident of Dumfries Township at the time of his marriage in 1849. He has yet to be found in the 1851 census, but he is in South Dumfries as of the 1861 census. Daughter Matilda's marriage registration places her birth in Brantford. This may well be since she was born in approximately 1850, but the 1851 census was not begun until January of 1852 and the family is not found in this census. Library & Archives Canada states that the 1851 every-person census for part 4 of Brantford has not survived. Of course, by January of 1852, the family might have been anywhere and there are numbers of areas wherein the census done at that time has not survived.

David is shown as a school teacher as of the 1861 census and as township clerk as of the 1871 census, but his entries into the township records as a clerk begin in July of 1869 when such record keeping was begun.

The 1881 census shows David as a school teacher, and, again, as with the 1871 census, the 1891 census shows him as township clerk.

David was still functioning as township clerk as late as October of 1895 according to his entries for South Dumfries deaths. The next entries are made by the new clerk, William Fleming, as of January of 1896. David died on June 24, 1896, and is buried in St. George in what is usually known as the Old Pioneer Presbyterian Cemetery. This has sometimes been known as the Hunter Hoodless Cemetery, but it is understood that the former is the preferred name. Find-a-Grave has a photograph of David and Jane's gravestone.

A note here.

Ancestry has a list of passengers for a ship of illegible name which arrived at New York from Liverpool on 2 July, 1845. This shows a John Babtey, age 53, farmer, destined Upper Canada. With him and apparently his wife is Matilda, age 56, and an apparent son David, age 22. Again, David is described as a farmer, as are his parents, though with a check mark.

This would be the right age for David and, since his eldest daughter is named Matilda, it may well be that Matilda Babtey, so shown, was his mother. A clear record for John and Matilda in later years has yet to be found.
