When John was age 6, his family moved to Midhurst in Vespra Township, north of Barrie. He was educated locally, but also attended the Strathroy Trining Institute for High School teachers. He was school principal in Welland and Woodstock, but was also a school inspector in Peterborough. He later went into life insurance and still later into finance and stocks and bonds. He had literary interests, especially in poetry and was a great advocate in the teaching of Canadian poetry. His wife Amelia had literary interests as well. He also served for some years as an honorary captain and quartermaster in the Canadian Militia, with the 3rd Prince of Wales Canadian Dragoons. |
