NoteThe 1851 census at Galt shows James Warnock, age 25, as a clerk. He has yet to be found in the 1861 census.

The 1864 Waterloo County Directory shows James Warnock as being a hardware merchant, and the 1867 Waterloo County Directory shows James Warnock & Co., general hardware and manufacturers supplies, Main Street, Galt.

The 1871 census shows James as an ironmonger and a Presbyterian. This census was enumerated beginning 2nd April. James appears as single; he wasn't married until November of the next year.

The 1881 census in Galt shows James with wife Kate. He is described as a merchant. They have with them 3 children. Also with them is a Thomas Hamilton, clerk, age 25, born in the U.S. At some level he will be at least an extended family member of Kate's. She was in the household of a Thomas Hamilton, lawyer, as of the 1860 and 1870 censuses in Mobile, Alabama. In the 1860 census appears a Thomas Hamilton (Jr.), age 11. The age doesn't quite compute with that of Thomas Hamilton who resides with them in Galt in 1871, but he is likely the same person.

The 1891 census shows James and Kate in Galt and James is shown as being in manufacturing.

James died in 1898. Kate is still in Galt with her three children as of the 1901 census.
