NoteThe spelling of Elizabeth Applebe's maiden name is shown in this tree as 'Applebe' as opposed to 'Appleby'. The spelling was evidently rather malleable within the family, but the name appears as Applebe on the family's gravestone in Barrie Union Cemetery, and Elizabeth's is specifically designated as such, which is the reason for receiving the same treatment here. Notice both spellings appear in the death registration as shown below. Elizabeth's married name Garvin does not appear on the gravestone's inscription and the stone shows a one day disagreement with her date of death, but comparing her parents names, which are on the stone, with their names as they appear on her marriage registration should remove any doubt that she is the same person.

Elizabeth Appleby died May 12, 1911. Age 52 yrs., 4 mos., 16 dys. Born Canada on December 26, 1911(!) Place of death Grace Hospital. Parents Sampson Applebe and Ann Hayes, both born Ireland. Physician Chas. R. Smith. Informant J. W. Garvin, Wellesley Ave. Cause of death valvular disease of heart - 15 years.

The physician's name, ill written, is either Smith or Smart. That Elizabeth's year of death is shown as 1911 will be a slip of the pen. The Wesleyan Methodist baptism record tells that she was born in December 26, 1858.

(This latter, the Wesleyan Methodist baptism, raises an interesting question. Elizabeth was baptized the same day as her sister Sarah, on the 24th of May, 1862. Elizabeth is shown as being born in Napanee on December 26, 1858; Sarah's birth is shown as 7 October, 1860, in Barrie. The 1861 census shows the family as Church of England. The 1871 and 1891 censuses show the family as Presbyterian. The 1881 census shows them as Church of England. Nowhere, except in the Wesleyan Methodist baptism register is anyone in the family shown to be a Methodist. At this point in time, it would be guessing to try to explain what happened. For a remarkable list of the Wesleyan Methodist baptisms, see bowergenealogy.ca and go to 'Resources'. This shows not only a transcription of names, but links to the images of the pages in the register. An excellent contribution.)

A brief obituary appeared on page 10 of the Saturday, May 13th, 1911, edition of the Toronto Daily Star. The obituary identifies her as Mrs. J. W. Garvin and tells that she and her husband had two adopted children. Her death is said to have happened the previous night at Grace Hospital and that her burial was to take place at Barrie on Monday in the 'forenoon'. The obituary tells that she had resided in Barrie, Welland, Woodstock, and Peterborough.
