Joseph Burrows

ID # 6075, (1812-1858)
BirthJoseph Burrows was born in 1812 at Lincolnshire, England.
MarriageHe married Charlotte Ribble on 14 April 1840.
Our only source for the marriage date of Joseph Burrows and Charlotte Ribble is to be found on page 64 of Ontario Marriage Notices, Thomas B. Wilson, Hunterdon House, Lambertville, N.J., 1982. Here, Mr. Wilson is extracting from the Christian Guardian issue of 13 May, 1840. It refers to the marriage of Joseph Burrows and Charlotte Ribble, both of Nelson (Township) on the '14th ult.' (ultimo.) This would be the 14th of April of the same year. The marriage was performed by Rev. H. Biggar. It may very well have been performed in Nelson Township, but the notice doesn't say so.

DeathHe died on 1 May 1858 at Branchton, North Dumfries Twp., Waterloo Co..
BurialHe was buried at Sheffield Cemetery, Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co..
NoteHe See notes under Joseph's daughter Almira relating to the will of Joseph Burrows (for the moment we have little information available.) Beyond this, Familysearch has a microfilm reel available via their website, 008189734, Wentworth County, Ancaster, Binbrook, Beverly Twp. Surveys. The Copetown village surveys begin at page 211 (image 186). A number of these village lots were sold to a Joseph Burrows by Samuel C. Ridley. The difficulty is that these transactions begin in 1869 and are found as late as 1881. Some of the transactions ended with 'vesting orders' - apparently to do with default on the mortgage. Given the years involved, they cannot directly have to do with Joseph Burrows the husband of Charlotte Ribble, for they are both long dead. Their son Joseph is too young to have been a principal.

Either there were two Joseph Burrows or these later transactions somehow represented an estate. This latter doesn't seem highly likely, but an examination of the land transaction as well as Joseph's will might explain the history.

Beyond this, the Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides a transcription of a death notice as it appeared in the 11th May, 1858, edition of the Berlin Chronicle. It records that Joseph 'Burrowes' died 01 May, 1858, at Branchton, Dumfries. He is identified as the postmaster, age 44. The death notice goes on to tell that his wife and eldest daughter were laid in the grave only a few weeks before leaving seven children as orphans.

This agrees with Library & Archives Canada's post office records. This shows Joseph Burrows becoming postmaster in 1855 and dates his death to 1858-05-01.
