Eleanor Burrows
ID # 6084, (1844-)
| Father | Joseph Burrows (1812-1858) |
| Mother | Charlotte Ribble (1823-1858) |
| Baptism | Eleanor Burrows was baptized in 1844 at Beverly Township, Canada West, Gore District. |
| Marriage | She married David Garbutt on 11 September 1861 at Halton County. MS248 reel 7, Vol. 17, page 36 Halton County Marriage Register. Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. James Gray of the Wesleyan Methodist Church for the year ending 31st December, A.D. 1861 and registered by his successor, Rev. W. J. Hunter of Wellington Square (later Burlington.) David Garbut, 21, born and residing Nelson. Parents David and Sarah Garbutt. Eleanor Burrows, 18, born Beverly, residing East Flamboro. Parents Joseph and Charlotte Burrows. Witnesses David Hanger (or Flanger) and Eleanor Willson. On Sept 11, 1861 Nelson Township of Halton County borders East Flamborough of Wentworth County. The county marriage registers do not typically record the exact location of a given marriage. The registration was filed by Rev. Hunter who was located in Halton as presumeably was his predecessor, Rev. Gray. It's entirely possible that marriages were performed by these clergymen on either side of the county border and the marriage could quite easily have been held in East Flamborough. Considering the nature of the forms, Rev. Hunter might have had no idea where the marriage was performed. |
| Note | David Garbutt and Eleanor Burrows were married on September 11, 1861. This is as recorded in the Halton County Marriage Register. (See marriage notes for David and Eleanor.) No record for Eleanor has been found thereafter. Death registers did not come into effect until July of 1869. A burial record for Eleanor has not been found nor a newspaper article relating to her death. A David Garbut, age 28, appears as a laborer with the farm family of William Bennett of Nelson Township at the time of the 1871 census. If this is indeed the husband of Eleanor, it would make him rather younger than his age at time of marriage. The 1881 census does not show a David Garbutt of reasonable age in Nelson Township, but a David Garbutt, laborer, age 38, appears with farmer Harle Robins in Clinton Township, Lincoln County. Here again, he is a laborer, and is probably the same person. Neither of these censuses show his marital status. The 1891 census shows a David Garbutt, age 47, laborer and uncle, in the home of farmer David McTernan, or McFernan. In this census he is shown as a widower. If, especially, the 1871 and 1891 censuses correctly identify David then we must believe that his wife Eleanor Burrows went to an early grave. Probably the same David Garbutt died on June 1st, 1894, in Nelson Township. The death registration is 006448-94. He is shown as age 52 on the death registration, which does not agree with his age as of the 1891 census. There is the briefest of death notices in the June 7, 1894 edition of the Canadian Champion newspaper of Milton. This simply notes his death on June 1st and shows his age as 52 years, 3 months, and 28 days. It is possible, just, that the papers peripheral to the will of Joseph Burrows might provide some information as to whether Eleanor was living at the time of probate. Actual probate of the will may not have happened until 1867. |
