Note | The McGill University's Digital County Atlas project shows J. Pitton on concession 2, lot 8, of Beverly. This does not give acreage. The associated map indicates that he did not hold the whole of the township lot, but rather Conrad Misener, the brother of Adam Misener, held a portion of it. The date for this atlas is 1875. Certainly, as early as 1818, Nicholas Misener, the father of Conrad and Adam, held an interest in the lot. The abstract index is not clear as to the amount of acreage Nicholas actually held. The abstract index for this lot shows Adam Misener selling John Pitton a quarter portion of this lot (49-1/4 acres) on 29 April, 1863. A second page of the abstract index is not to hand so later information is not available. The 1891 Beverly Farmer's Directory shows John at Concession 1, lot 12, with postal address being Lynden. This directory does show John as a freeholder, meaning he owned the property - though not necessarily the entire lot. The Hamilton branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society's transcription of Troy Cemetery shows a William Pitton who died on 29 March, 1868, at age 72 years 5 months. This would make his birth year 1795. He would be old enough to be John's father, though we have no direct evidence for this. The 1871 census at Beverly shows John and Susan with 7 children. He is shown as being of the English Church and she and the children as Episcopal Methodist. Death reg. 022888-99 Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co. John Pitton died Nov. 7, 1898, age 74. Residence Lynden.
