Note | The 1891 census shows Frederick and Mary (Maria) in Normanby Township. He is 44 and she 33. They have with them four children: Annie, 14; Adelie, 10; William, 4; and Albert 2. The 1901 census appears to show Frederick Stephan's arrival in Canada as in the year of 1867. The first three digits of the year are clear enough and 1867 may be a good interpretation. In any event, he has yet to be found in the 1871 census. Frederick's gravestone in the Evangelical United Brethren Cemetery shows his age as 56 years and 2 days. This calculates to a birth year of 1846. The 1901 census shows his date of birth as 4 January, 1846. Here, his name is shown as Friedrich. According to the 1896 Farmers and Business Directory for Gray County, etc., Frederick and his family were located on lot 18 in the 9th concession of Normanby Township. Some land notes: See Onland.ca Grey (16), Normanby, Book 191 Concessions 7 to 9 Twp of Normanby, Concession 9, Lot 18 As presented, the writing is faint to the point of unreadable, but, what follows, shows something of the history of the Feick and Stephan families on this lot. The Crown Patent, 1878, was to Conrad Lippert. In 1893, Conrad Lippert et ux (and wife) sold to John Feick 101 acres for 5600 dollars In 1895 John Feick et ux sold the 101 acres to Fred'k Stephan for 5300 dollars On approximately the same dates Frederick Stephan gave for this property to John Feick one dollar. The nature of this transaction is unreadable. In 1902, there was another transaction between John Feick and Fred Stephan which is unreadable. Then, in 1910, Annie Clements, Adeline Stephan, Albert Stephan, and Andrew Filsinger, appears to have sold interst in the property to William Stephan. The readability of all this is limited. It may be that something more readable may be available under the GSU series of microfilm reels at the Archives of Ontario, but which your researcher is presently unable to attend. Also, as the above referenced transactions are on documentation known as the Abstract Index, there are probably documents of a fuller nature available in the microfilmed land registration books. The transaction numbers on the Abstract Index may be of some assistance in finding these. |
