Waterloo County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Robert Acheson, a minister of the United Presbyterian Church, Galt, for the year ending 31st day of December, A.D. 1864

John Harvey, 27, born and residing Dumfries. Parents David (Harvie) and Mary Fraser.
Nancy Cornell, 19, born and residing Beverly. Parents William (Cornell) and Ellen Labelle.
Witness Thos. Fraser of Dumfries.
On Oct. 26, 1864.

Robert Acheson registered the marriage in Waterloo County, but it was actually held in Beverly Township in Wentworth County, probably at the bride's parents residence. We are informed of this by way of an extract of the Nov. 2, 1864, issue of the Dumfries Reformer. This appears in Dumfries Reformer Marriage, 1860-1865, which work was done by Rosemary Ambrose and was made available through the Waterloo Region Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. We are briefly told that Nancy Cornell was married to John Harvey (Harvie) in Beverly by Rev. R. Acheson.

DeathHe died on 4 November 1909 at North Dumfries Twp., Waterloo Co., at age 72.
BurialHe was buried at Section 6, Mountview Cemetery, Galt, Ontario.
NoteFor John Harvie's baptism, see microfilm LCM-30, United Church of Canada Archives. At the time of John's baptism, First Church was a Presbyterian Church. The baptismal recording is in the handwriting of James Strang, the First Church minister. No where does the record directly say so, but an examination of the baptism and marriage records of the church, along with associated comments, make it reasonable that the handwriting is that of Strang.

John Harvie, died November 4, 1909, born July 14, 1837. The death registration places his birth in Scotland. This is incorrect. His age is given as 72 yrs., 4 mos., 20 dys. Place of death is shown as lot 2, concession 8, North Dumfries. He is shown as 'married and wife living'. His father is shown as David Harvie, born Scotland, and Mary Fraser, born Scotland. The informant was Andrew Pullin, son-in-law, Branchton.
