Beyond this, a correspondent has forwarded a copy from the General Register Office that reads page 53, Baptisms 1794, Parish of Muirkirk, County of Ayr. Alexander Harvey and Mary Cameron. A son born May 9th and baptised in the church upon the 11th named David. The death of David Lennox Harvie was well prior to the advent of civil death registrations. Rosemary Ambrose in association with the Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society extracted notices from the Dumfries Reformer and David's death notice was found in the May 3, 1865, edition. It tells that David died on 28 April, 1865, in Galt at age 71 and that he had lived near Branchton since 1811. That he was 71 will be approximately correct; he and his family, however, will not have been in Dumfries Township prior to 1817. David Lennox Harvie's brother-in-law, Robert Carrick, entered into a land purchase agreement with William Dickson in June of 1817 and David's father, Alex Harvie Sr. signed a land purchase agreement on October 18th of 1817. The late spring or early summer will be the earliest time frame of the Harvie family's arrival in Dumfries Township. |
