Home District Marriage Register

Extracted from list of marriages solemnized by Thomas Johnson in 1848

Robert Maw and Ellenor Harper, married at Esquesing on May 11 by license. Witnesses George Hunter and James Barber.

See Marriage Notices of Ontario, William D. Reid, Hunterdon House, Lambertville, N.J., 1980, page 314. This records the marriage of Robert Maw and Eleanor Harper and directs us to the May 17th, 1848, edition of Toronto's Globe newspaper. This is available from the Globe & Mail archives via the Metro Toronto library and may be accessed by anyone with a Toronto library card.

Three marriages by Rev. T. Johnson are noted, the pertinent one reading as follows:

At Georgetown, on the 11th inst., by (Rev. T. Johnson), Mr. Robert Maw, to Miss Eleanor Harper, both of Esquesing.

Unquote

Eleanor does appear to have gone by Ellen, but Eleanor was apparently her correct name. According to the notice, Eleanor was evidently resident in Esquesing Township at the time. She was approximately 21 and was probably employed there. The one additional piece of information we gain from the newspaper article is that the marriage took place in Georgetown.

NoteShe Some notes about Ellen's place in the Harper family.

A marriage registration for Robert and Ellen has been found in Esquesing Twp., Home District, in 1848. It has no information as to Ellen's family. We are left to infer Ellen's place in the Harper family from circumstantial evidence. Certainly, marriage and death registrations of her children make it plain that her maiden name was Harper. Further, Robert Maw's will, filed for probate in Wellington County in January of 1869, shows James Harper of Arthur Township as an executor. One of the death registrations of her children places Ellen's birth in County Cavan in Ireland, the same location as her presumed siblings. In 1872, when Delilah Harper, daughter of James, married Robert Sivill, Annie 'Marr' of Erin was a witness to the marriage. The image of the marriage registration does show Annie's name written as Marr, but it seems reasonable that the township clerk made his own interpretation of the handwriting of the clergyman and that Annie's name was likely Maw. (Census information for the name Marr in Erin in 1871 has not been found.) Finally, James Harper and his wife Abigail Blanchard named a son Robert Maw Harper. Based on this evidence and until contrary information is received, Ellen Harper is included in this tree as a daughter of Philip and Elizabeth Harper.

Death reg. 017965-85 Erin Twp., Wellington Co. 23 April 1885, Ellen Maw, 58, born Ireland. Informant Emma Maw, daughter of deceased, Hillsburg.

Some notes about Emma, or Amy, Maw.

The 1861 census in Georgetown shows a child Emma, age 2, daughter of Robert and Ellen. The 1871 census in Erin Township shows a daughter Amy, aged 12. Given the number of stones in Greenwood Cemetery at Georgetown for deceased children of Robert and Ellen, it seems reasonable that if there was a child named Emma and that she had died prior to 1871 there would be a stone present for her in the family plot. In 1881 Amy is shown as present with Ellen in Erin Township. When Ellen died in 1885, Amy was already married to Andrew Mitchell by about a month and, if indeed she was the informant, should have been shown with the name Mitchell. When Harry Edmonds Mitchell was born in 1890, his parents were shown as Andrew Mitchell and Emma Maw. In 1930, a minor spelling correction was made to Harry's name. The person make the correction is shown as his mother. Also done, apparently at the same time, was a correction to the name of Harry's mother. Emma was crossed out and Amy was written in above it.

Pending further information, it is believed that Emma and Amy are one and the same person. Emma may have been a second given name or a nickname.

One further item of note: The 1881 census in Erin Township, E3-page 8, clearly shows Ellen Maw and Amy Maw (mother and daughter) in the same household. One transcription to be found online transcribes their name as Mason and suggests that there are other people in the same household. This is not correct.
