Home District Marriage Register

Extracted from list of marriages solemnized by Thomas Johnson in 1848

Robert Maw and Ellenor Harper, married at Esquesing on May 11 by license. Witnesses George Hunter and James Barber.

See Marriage Notices of Ontario, William D. Reid, Hunterdon House, Lambertville, N.J., 1980, page 314. This records the marriage of Robert Maw and Eleanor Harper and directs us to the May 17th, 1848, edition of Toronto's Globe newspaper. This is available from the Globe & Mail archives via the Metro Toronto library and may be accessed by anyone with a Toronto library card.

Three marriages by Rev. T. Johnson are noted, the pertinent one reading as follows:

At Georgetown, on the 11th inst., by (Rev. T. Johnson), Mr. Robert Maw, to Miss Eleanor Harper, both of Esquesing.

Unquote

Eleanor does appear to have gone by Ellen, but Eleanor was apparently her correct name. According to the notice, Eleanor was evidently resident in Esquesing Township at the time. She was approximately 21 and was probably employed there. The one additional piece of information we gain from the newspaper article is that the marriage took place in Georgetown.

DeathHe died on 24 December 1868 at Hillsburgh, Erin Township, Wellington Co., at age 41.
BurialHe was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Georgetown, Ontario.
NoteThe will of Robert Maw (junior) appears on microfilm GS1 reel 492, Wellington Surrogate Court, 1869, nbr 539; and a copy on GS2 reel 212, Register E, pages 584 to 586.

The preliminary petition states that Robert Maw, woolen manufacturer, died on or about the 24th day of December, 1868, in the township of Erin in the county of Wellington, and that he had a fixed place of abode in the township of Erin which, according to his will, was in the village of Hillsburg. His will is dated the 28th day of September, 1868. The will was filed for probate in Wellington County in January of 1869. The will names William Hardy, Ellen Maw (Robert's wife), and James Harper. The application for probate describes James Harper as being of the township of Arthur, yeoman (farmer).

The will remembers first Robert's wife Ellen, and the following children:

Elizabeth Maw, Ann Maw, Joseph Henry Maw, Amy Maw, and Ida Maw.

These five appears in the list of the children of Robert and Ellen. We know of Harison and Bobbie from a transcription of Greenwood Cemetery. The transcriptions appears on microfilm MS451 reel 98 at the Archives of Ontario.

The 1861 census shows Robert as being born in Canada West. A death registration for one of his children places his birth in England, but this is not consistent with other records. A death registration for one child states that Robert was born in Flamboro West Township. No confirming information has been found. Given the year of his birth, it seems correct to say that he was born in Upper Canada. Gravestone information at Greenwood Cemetery in Georgetown shows his father, Robert Maw, as being born in Yorkshire, England; his mother, Elizabeth Creich, is said to have been born in Nottinghamshire, England. Both parents were living at the time of the 1861 census.

The gravestone for Robert indicates he died Dec. 24, 1868, aged 41 yrs., 9 mos., 12 days. His wife Ellen Harper died Apr 23, 1885, aged 58 yrs., 1 mo., 13 days.
