Philip's death notice appears in the November 5 issue of the Toronto Star and it is very spare. The notice requests that the Mount Forest, Clifford and Arthur newspapers pick up. It gives his wife's name as Mary Gilbert Harper and says that the funeral will be from his home address on November 8 at 3pm. It does not mention other family members, nor does it give a place of burial.

At the time of the 1901 census, Philip is boarding in the Prentice home in Nottawasaga Township, Simcoe Co. and is shown as a school teacher. His wife, Mary Gilbert, is with her brothers in Toronto. His daughter Catherine and son William are with their grandfather William Harper in Arthur Township. Winnifred is with her aunt and uncle, Margaret and Harvie Buchanan at Glen Morris. Son John Albert is with his Uncle Murdoch Harper in Arthur Twp. (Note: the 1901 census shows Philip's date of birth as 21 April, 1854.)

Philip Harper was buried November 8, 1921, in the North grave of Lot L, Section St. Matthias Road, St. James Cemetery at 635 Parliament Street in Toronto. The cemetery contact explained that this road in the cemetery no longer exists. Old roadways were dug up and used for burial plots. Mary Gilbert Harper's burial place is described as the Center of Lot L on St. Matthews Road. Mary and Philip are buried together. There are three graves on the plot, but only two have been used.

When the cemetery was visited, the office provided a map which marked the approximate center of now non-existant St. Matthias Road. This sits between sections K and J as described on the map. A description of the stone stated it to be flat on the ground, but it is an upright stone.

Philip left a will, filed with York County Surrogate Court on December 1, 1921. As might be expected, he left his property and the bulk of his estate to his wife Mary. He remembered his surviving children with bequests, but did not name them. He did leave his encyclopaedia to Roy Harper, son of Murdock Harper. He also leaves a bequest to a grand daughter Winnifred Tyndall. To date, a record for Winnifred Tyndall has not been found. No address for her is shown.
