Note | The Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario. Toronto:Historical Atlas Publishing Co., 1906, has a biography of William Turner. This has some useful information, for it tells of his marriage to Elizabeth Barlow, names their children, and tells of their coming to Toronto where he is said to have run a dairy business until moving on in 1872. A closer look at census information is of some use in filling out at least something of the family story. William Turner, age 18, agricultural labour, is with a family by the name of Steel in the 1841 census in Bagnall, Staffordshire, England. His parental family appears also in Bagnall, but on another page of the census. The page on which William appears is rather faded, but mainly readable. The page his parents and siblings appears upon is severely faded. A transcriber has shown the family name as Sumers, but someone has entered a correction that shows the family name as Turner and this is easily enough agreed with. We may say that William's parents were Samuel and Hannah Turner. The 1851 census in Bagnall shows William as head of the household. With him is wife Elizabeth and infant children Elizabeth and Hannah. Also in the household is William's widowed father, Samuel, age 51, a wheelwright, and much younger siblings Enoch, Martha, and Alice, as well as Isaac, age 5, and described as his wife's son. The 1901 census in Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario, tells that William came to Canada in 1856. The 1906 Wellington County Atlas would have it that William first settled in Toronto, when actually the 1861 census has the family in Guelph Township of Wellington County. As mentioned, the 1861 census shows William, agricultural labor, and his wife Elizabeth, in Guelph Township. With them are seven children, the oldest of whom is Isaac. Also present, age 17, is Martha Turner. Martha appears in the 1851 in Bagnall, Staffordshire, with her widowed father in the home of William and Elizabeth. She is shown as age 7, so we must believe that the Martha Turner present with the family in 1861 is William's sister. By 1871, William and his family are indeed in Toronto (St. David's Ward, Toronto East), and he is shown as a dairyman. By the 1881 census, William and Elizabeth are in Minto Township of Wellington County, where they appear to have remained for the rest of their lives. |
