NoteJohn Gamble was unquestionably born John Badger. He is mentioned in the will of John Gamble, his adoptive father as John Gamble, but the will states that he was also known as John Badger.

Since John chose on all his records to be known as John Gamble - on the records of his two marriages, on census information, and on his gravestone in Troy Cemetery , and in the names he gave his children - this tree shows him as John Gamble. There is no doubt, however, that his was born with the name Badger.

There is disagreement in the records as to the age of John Badger Gamble. All considered, it may be that the age as shown in the 1861 census is close and this is what has been chosen for this tree.

At the time John Gamble, that's to say John Gamble the adoptive parent, made his will, John Badger Gamble was said to be living in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and this is confirmed by U.S. census information for 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. By 1930, it appears that his second wife Mary is deceased.

The 1891 Farmers' Directory for the County of Wentworth shows John Gamble Jr. listed in Beverly Township. postal address Sheffield. He is shown as residing on lot 7 of the 6th concession, which would appear to be at or very near the village of Sheffield. Considering the information provided in the 1891 census, he was apparently working at a hotel in Sheffield which he may or may not have actually owned.

The 1891 census for Beverly, A2, page 13, shows John as a hotel keeper. With him is wife Ella, daughter Mable 11, William 9, and Gertrude 5.

Old Fulton Post Cards present us with pages from the Niagara Falls (New York) Gazette of Feb. 9 and 11 of 1931.

On page 4 of the Monday February 9th issue we find an obituary for John Gamble. It states that he died Saturday afternoon (the 7th) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Ware, 1136 Whitney Avenue. The story tells that he went to Niagara Falls, New York, from Sheffield, Ontario, in 1895. It shows his survivors as Mrs. J. M. Jamieson of Galt; Mrs. J. Schultz of Detroit; Mrs. John Ware of Niagara Falls, New York; and a son William Gamble of St. Louis, Missouri.

Page 15 of the Wednesday, February 11th issue tells of the funeral being held on Tuesday, February 10th. It says that the body was sent to Lynden at four in the morning for burial on the 11th in Troy Cemetery.
