Annie Hammill died on the 23rd of February, 1895. The Hamilton Spectator carried an obituary for her in their March 2nd issue. It was datelined Sheffield and stated that Mrs. Anna Hammill had died at the home of her stepson B. Hammill. We are told that she had been married to the late Charles Hammill and that her maiden name was Ingles. It also referred to her first husband as Mr. Babcock. The obituary mainly informs us of Annie's maiden name. Annie was buried with both husbands in Sheffield Cemetery, according to a transcription done by the Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Her first husband is shown as Wilder Babcock who died 12 December 1854 at age 37. Her second husband is shown as Charles Hammill who died January 7, 1874, at age 68. Annie's age at time of death, according to her stone, is shown as 80 years, 3 months and 17 days which calculates to a date of birth as 6 November, 1814. We do not know with know with any certainty anything about Annie's parentage, but Wilder Babcock's brother, Elisha, lived in Dumfries Township, not far from Sheffield, and he lived close to a David Ingles, or Ingalls, their properties either backing on each other or nearly so according to the 1832 and 1842 censuses. (The abstract index pages have not been examined.) There was also a Norman Ingalls who in later years was in Blenheim Township. See notes under Elisha Babcock for rather more information about the Babcocks. |
