Marriage | He married Annie Ingles. A marriage registration for Charles and Annie has not been found. Documentation relating to lot 4 on the 7th concession of Beverly makes it obvious that Ann, or Annie, married Charles Hammill after the death of her husband, Wilder Babcock. Charles and Ann are buried with Wilder in Sheffield Cemetery. |
Death | He died on 7 January 1874. |
Burial | He was buried at Sheffield Cemetery, Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co.. |
Note | Transactions relating to lot 4 on the 7th concession of Beverly identify Charles Hamill as the husband of Ann, or Annie, the widow of Wilder Babcock who was an innkeeper in the Sheffield area. Charles is buried in Sheffield Cemetery on one side of Wilder and wife Ann is buried on the other. Charles' first wife was 'Miss Howell' according to The Annals of the Forty. Ancaster's Heritage shows her full name as Matilda Howell. This is well confirmed by the marriage of Charles Hamill's son Benjamin to Mary Elizabeth Passmore in Goderich in 1876. The marriage registration shows his mother as Matilda Howell. (For the moment, we will note here that Mary's parents are shown as John Passmore and Almira - Elmira - Ingalls. Elmira was evidently dead by the time of the 1861 census and John Passmore had remarried. His second wife was Emily.) Charles' second wife Annie apparently lived with her step son Benjamin in Beverly for the remainder of her days. Benjamin was the informant for Annie's death. She is shown as living with him and his family as of the 1891 census. |
