| Note | For the present and for the most part, the descendants of Samuel Hammill are not taken past his children and some grandchildren. The family name is variously spelled, early records spelling Samuel's surname as Hamel. The burial records for the Anglican church in Ancaster, St. John's, entirely spell the family name as Hammill. Spellings in later records vary, sometimes with the same person. If the church burial records are consistent in their family spelling, inscriptions on the family gravemarkers are not. Both Hamill and Hammill are found in the Hamilton OGS Branch's transcription of St. John's Anglican Cemetery. We may note, however, that the 'Hammill' is mostly how the family name is presented on the gravemarkers.
In this tree, the spelling of the family name in a marriage or death registration is followed as given in the record itself, but 'Hammill' is kept in the tree's name listings. Casual family researchers should not take this seriously. There are probably few family names wherein spelling consistency could be found going back only a very few generations. |
