Marriage | He married Ruth Able, daughter of David Able and Mary Dineen, on 15 December 1852. See Marriage Notices of Ontario, 1813-1854, William D. Reid. The pages referred to are extracts from the Christian Guardian edition of 29 December, 1852. See pages 378 and 379. (Hunterdon House, Lambertville, New Jersey, 1980, reprinted for Clearfield Co. Isaac Brock Howard was a Wesleyan Methodist minister who served in E. Flamborough from 1852-1854. The above marriage record does not tell us the location of the marriage. If Rev. Howard was a circuit rider, then it may well be that they were married in Beverly Township. This is not certain, however. |
Death | He died on 21 July 1888 at Derby Twp., Grey County. |
Burial | He was buried on 23 July 1888 at Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound. |
Note | According to Greenwood Cemetery's published list of burials, James was said to be age 60 at the time of his death. His date of death and that of burial is provided in the list. Death reg. 005916-88 Derby Township, Grey County James Hunt died July 21, 1888. Farmer, age 60, Methodist. Born Canada. Informant A.M. Taylor, farmer, Sydenham. The sequence of events isn't entirely clear, but on 8 November, 1854, John Gamble of Beverly purchased 100 acres of the north half of lot 5 in the 7th concession of Derby Township in Grey County. On 14 April, 1856, John Gamble and wife (Harriet Able) sold this parcel to James Hunt. The memorial number isn't clear, but appears to be 1830. It essentially sets out the transaction of purchase by James Hunt of the described half lot and it is witnessed by John Cumming and David Able, both of the township of Beverly. Why John Gamble might have purchased this Derby Township lot (from William D. Taylor and wife) to begin with isn't at all clear. There doesn't appear to be a family relationship and Derby is a considerable distance from Beverly Township. We may say that the above transaction was in some part an exchange, for on 14 April, 1856, James Hunt and wife sold to John Gamble a fraction of lot 7 on the 1st concession of Beverly. This memorial nbr. 267 was also witnessed by John Cumming and David Able. |
