Note | Some researchers have named the parents of Miller, Lawrence, Rebecca, Mercy, and Elizabeth Lawrason and their siblings as William Lawrason and his wife Anna. Lawrence Lawrason Jr., however, wrote a brief genealogy and named his grandfather Lawrason as Thomas. This seems reasonable in view of the fact that Mercy Lawrason Hammill named her first son Thomas and so did Lawrence Lawrason. Miller Lawrason named his second son Thomas, his first son being named after his father-in-law, John Purves. We do not know the name of Thomas' wife. (The above mentioned genealogy appears in the papers of Lawrence Lawrason Jr. at the library in the University of Western Ontario and a copy is to be found in Some Records of the Lawrason Family by Delores MacIntyre, 1993, Rev. 2000.) The Lawrason family tell the story that they are descended from John Larison, the Dane, who fell foul of the Danish court and had to flee to Scotland. When he found that a price was on his head, he fled to Ireland and from there to America. The written source for this story is a book written in 1888 by Dr. Cornelius Larison, the name of which is: The Larisun Famili, A biografic Scetch, etc. This may be found in PDF format and is written in Cornelius Larison's own species of phonetic spelling. To call it difficult to read is an understatement. John Larison the Dane is believed to have had a son John and a grandson William. William Larison is believed to have settled near what is now Hopewell, New Jersey perhaps as early as 1708. He was at New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, when he died in 1749. In that year he wrote a will in which he names his sons William, Thomas, John and George. It is believed that his son Thomas is the Thomas Lawrason that is the father of the Rebecca, Mercy, Lawrence, Miller and Elizabeth. This is unconfirmed. Other children have been suggested by some researchers and there are problems with evidence. It is possible that there was a son James, born in New Jersey in 1753, and who may have spent some time in Canada before removing to Alexandria, Virginia, where he died in 1824. Larison, rather than Lawrason, seems to have been the spelling used by Thomas. For this list of the children of Thomas Lawrason, or Larison, which follows, we rely on the book written in 1888 by Alexander Dingwall Fordyce of Fergus, Ontario, entitled Family Record of the name Dingwall Fordyce, Aberdeenshire, Vol. II. Fordyce was a connection of the Lawrasons by marriage and his list of siblings of Miller Lawrason on page cxxiv accords well with other sources. As it stands, it is the best and earliest record that we have. Add to this, Miller Lawrason's grand daughter Mary Thomson and, finally, her father, Miller's son, Lawrence Purvis Lawrason, were in Fergus in their later years and were undoubtedly acquainted with Fordyce and probably contributed to the information which he provides. |
