| Note | Initially, for a list of the children of Daniel Corson and Rebecca Lawrason we begin with that of Damaris Chase. Her specific work is The Canadian Corson Family, A short-form genealogy, revised in Sep '83. There is also an elaboration to be found on page 41 of Delores MacIntyre's work Some Records of the Lawrason Family, revised 2000. Also of considerable value is the 1879 book Father Corson by Rev. John Carroll. Miss Chase states that Daniel and Rebecca had twelve children, of which 'six are known'. An effort here is made to find any updated information that adds to the well of information for the Corson/Courson family. See Vol. 1 Death Notices From The Christian Guardian, 1836 to 1850, Donald A. McKenzie, 2008, Global Heritage Press, page 76. Corson, Daniel, father of Rev. R. Corson, and one of the oldest settlers in the Niagara district died in Brantford, Feb. 19, 1849; age, 85. - March 7, 1849, p. 83, D.N. (death notice). We do not have a place of burial for Daniel Corson. It's possible that he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery at Brantford. The problem with this is that burials were not apparently begun there until 1850. In the cemetery's preamble, as provided by the Brant County Branch of the OGS, there were some remains reburied there, but it isn't clear from where they came. A note here on a mystery that remains to be resolved. The Kent Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has a transcription of Sherman Cemetery in Thamesville, Camden Township, Kent County. This is available from the society; it also appears on microfilm at the Archives of Ontario on MS451 reel 18. There are no page numbers, but stone number 216 reads as follows: IMO Mary wife of Daniel Corson d. Sept. 4, 1860, aged 88 yrs. A photo of the stone has recently been provided by a correspondent and Mary's stone is in remarkably good and readable condition and it agrees with the above transcription. We may calculate Mary's birth to the year 1772. This would make her much too old to be the wife of Daniel Corson Jr., which leaves us with at least the possibility that she was the second wife of Daniel Corson Sr. We have no information as to the years of birth, death, or place of burial for Rebecca Lawrason, so Daniel Corson Sr. may well have remarried. This transcription was accidently found while searching the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid (OCFA). None of the stones surrounding Mary's stone as shown in the transcription give any indication of possible family relationships. A followup note. Correspondence was received, the originator of which appears to be a Corson researcher, a Mr. Corson Ellis, that Mary's name was House before she married Daniel Corson. Is this her maiden name? Was she a widow and House the name of her first husband? This remains to be found. The Archives of Ontario does have a string of Niagara District 'House' wills on a microfilm reel. These might prove to contain the solution to the story. The reel number is MS8412 for anyone able to tackle it. |
