Father | Daniel Corson (1763-1849) |
Mother | Rebecca Lawrason |
Birth | Esther Corson was born in 1788. |
Marriage | She married Timothy Wood on 22 September 1807 at Niagara District. See Vital Records of Upper Canada / Canada West, Vol. 1: Part 1, Niagara District, 1795-1856, compiled by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai, Global Heritage Press, 2000, page 6. This appears under the heading on page 3: Record of Marriages solemnized before me, Robert Nelles, one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the District of Niagara and Province of Upper Canada - in the records of St. Andrew's Grimsby, 1796-1823. Timothy Wood, to Esther Corson. 22 Sept 1807, Robert Nelles J.P. (The above marriage is not from the Niagara Marriage Register but from the records of Robert Nelles. This is supplementary to what's available in the Marriage Register.) |
Death | She died on 6 October 1874 at Charlotteville Twp., Norfolk Co.. |
Note | Death reg. 004140-74 Charlotteville Twp., Norfolk Co. Esther Corson, widow of late Timothy Wood, died 6th October, 1874. Age 84 years and 2 days. Born Canada (?). Methodist. Informant Mrs. Maynard. Information as to Esther's husbands is limited. It's evident that her first husband was Timothy Wood. As noted above, her death registration was filed by Mrs. Maynard (Lydia Maynard of Charlotteville) and records Esther's passing under her maiden name of Corson. Lydia died in 1909 in Langton Village in North Walsingham Township in Norfolk County. Her parentage on her death registration is given as Timothy Wood, born Long Island, and Esther Courson, born Canada. A correspondent kindly pointed out to me Esther's enumeration in the 1851 census. She appears as Esther Shaw in the household of William and Lydia Maynard in Charlotteville Township of the newly established county of Norfolk. This was in the old Talbot District. Esther is shown as Esther Maynard in the 1861 census in Charlotteville Township. She is age 71, born Canada West, and is with her daughter Lydia Maynard and husband William. Obviously, this is an errored entry. In the 1871 census, Esther is shown as Esther Shoff, age 82, born Ontario, widow, and, again, with Lydia Maynard and husband William. It is interesting that an index to a transcription for Langton Baptist Cemetery in North Walsingham Township, which is where Lydia and William Maynard are buried, also shows burials for Shoffs. Esther would have been a widow when she married Mr. Shoff and, probably, he was a widower. There may have been a family friendship through the Baptist church. Esther does appear in census information as a Wesleyan Methodist. This aspect has been researched, but, so far, with no results. |
