Harry Logan Weir

ID # 2144, (1900-1974)
BirthHarry Logan Weir was born in 1900 at New York State.
MarriageHe married Elizabeth Emily Ruth Cook, daughter of Alfred Richard Cook and Carmenta Dagmar Burnison, on 12 July 1922 at St. Paul's Chapel, Niagara Falls, New York.
We have two sources for the marriage of Harry Weir and Ruth Cook. The first is their marriage registration at Niagara Falls, New York, as provided by familysearch.org.

The marriage license is dated 11th July, 1922. It is for Harry Logan Weir of Yonkers, Westchester County, and Ruth Elizabeth Cook of Niagara Falls, County of Niagara, at Niagara Falls.

The groom is Harry Logan Weir of 52 Linden Street, Yonkers, teacher. Age 30. His parents were Robert Weir and Catherine Anderson, both born Scotland.

Ruth Elizabeth Cook, age 24, nurse, residing 532 4th Street, Niagara Falls. Parents Alfred R. Cook, born London, England, and Carmenta Burnison, born Hamilton, Ontario.

The clergyman states that he married the couple on 12th July, 1922, at Niagara Falls. The clergyman was Fredrk. S. Barkhurst. The witnesses were Frances E. Simkins and Jennie C. Brownlee.

The other source of information for the marriage of Harry Weir and Ruth Cook comes from the Saturday Afternoon, July 15, 1922, issue of The Yonkers Statesman. It does not give the specific date of the wedding. It gives Harry's middle name as Logan. It gives the location of the marriage as St. Paul's Chapel in Niagara Falls, New York. Of interest here is that Josie Vrooman of 'Queenstown' (Queenston) was the flower girl. Josie was the daughter of William Henry Vrooman and Josie Allen Connell. She was also a younger sister of Ila Vrooman, Harry Weir's second wife.

Josie was certainly Ruth Cook's cousin, though the degree of kinship was hardly close. We can only speculate as to how the family relationships were maintained over the decades. Ruth and Josie's common ancestors were Adam Vrooman, the UEL, and Margaret Mattice. Ruth's ancestor was Rachel Vrooman and Josie's ancestor was Solomon Vrooman. Rachel and Solomon were sister and brother.

MarriageHe married Ila Marjorie Vrooman, daughter of William Henry Vrooman and Josie Allen Connell, on 10 July 1946.
DeathHe died on 13 September 1974 at Yonkers, New York.
BurialHe was buried on 16 September 1974 at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
NoteHarry's wife Ruth died in 1943. Page 13 of the Niagara Falls (New York) Gazette, dated Saturday June 29, 1946, provides us with some information of interest under the heading 'Canadian Social':

The egagement is announced of Miss Ila M. Vrooman, daughter of Mrs. Vrooman and the late Mr. W. H. Vrooman of this city, to Mr. Harry L. Weir of Yonkers, N. Y. The wedding will take place on Wednesday afternoon, July 10, at 3 o'clock in St. Andrew's United Church.

This appears to be St. Andrew's United Church in Niagara Falls, Ontario, though the article is vague on this point.

The above newspaper extract is found on the Old Fulton New York Postcards web site.

Ila Vrooman Weir is buried with her parents in Fairview Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Ontario. The dates on her stone read 1906-1994.

The only other comment here of note is that Ila Vrooman will have been a cousin, though at some remove, of Ruth Cook. She is descended from Solomon Secord Vrooman.

A death notice appears in the September 14, 1974, edition of the Herald Statesman, Yonkers, N.Y. for Harry Weir. (This found on Old Fulton New York Postcards). His place of burial is given as Mt. Hope Cemetery at Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. His wife's name is shown as Ila (Vrooman) and his son's name is given as Bradford Weir of California. (His son's correct name was apparently Blair, rather than Bradford.)
