Elizabeth Emily Ruth Cook
ID # 2141, (1898-1943)
Father | Alfred Richard Cook (1866-1931) |
Mother | Carmenta Dagmar Burnison (1868-1962) |
Birth | Elizabeth Emily Ruth Cook was born on 9 February 1898 at St. Catharines, Lincoln County, Ontario. |
Marriage | She married Harry Logan Weir on 12 July 1922 at St. Paul's Chapel, Niagara Falls, New York. We have two sources for the marriage of Harry Weir and Ruth Cook. The first is their marriage registration at Niagara Falls, New York, as provided by familysearch.org. The marriage license is dated 11th July, 1922. It is for Harry Logan Weir of Yonkers, Westchester County, and Ruth Elizabeth Cook of Niagara Falls, County of Niagara, at Niagara Falls. The groom is Harry Logan Weir of 52 Linden Street, Yonkers, teacher. Age 30. His parents were Robert Weir and Catherine Anderson, both born Scotland. Ruth Elizabeth Cook, age 24, nurse, residing 532 4th Street, Niagara Falls. Parents Alfred R. Cook, born London, England, and Carmenta Burnison, born Hamilton, Ontario. The clergyman states that he married the couple on 12th July, 1922, at Niagara Falls. The clergyman was Fredrk. S. Barkhurst. The witnesses were Frances E. Simkins and Jennie C. Brownlee. The other source of information for the marriage of Harry Weir and Ruth Cook comes from the Saturday Afternoon, July 15, 1922, issue of The Yonkers Statesman. It does not give the specific date of the wedding. It gives Harry's middle name as Logan. It gives the location of the marriage as St. Paul's Chapel in Niagara Falls, New York. Of interest here is that Josie Vrooman of 'Queenstown' (Queenston) was the flower girl. Josie was the daughter of William Henry Vrooman and Josie Allen Connell. She was also a younger sister of Ila Vrooman, Harry Weir's second wife. Josie was certainly Ruth Cook's cousin, though the degree of kinship was hardly close. We can only speculate as to how the family relationships were maintained over the decades. Ruth and Josie's common ancestors were Adam Vrooman, the UEL, and Margaret Mattice. Ruth's ancestor was Rachel Vrooman and Josie's ancestor was Solomon Vrooman. Rachel and Solomon were sister and brother. |
Death | She died on 24 October 1943 at Yonkers, New York, at age 45. |
Burial | She was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Ontario. |
Note | An obituary for Ruth places her birth in St. Catharines on Feb. 9, 1898. This agrees with her birth registration. The obituary appears in the October 25, 1943, edition of the Herald Statesman, Yonkers, New York. It indicates that she was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Niagara Falls, Ontario. She is buried in the same section and plot as her parents. A photo of her stone appears on the Fairview Cemetery web site. A date for her burial is not given, but it appears that her inscription is on the reverse side of her parents' stone. The stone reads: WEIR/Ruth Cook/Feb 9, 1898 - October 24, 1943/beloved wife of Harry L. Weir. Ruth was a registered nurse and, according to the 1940 census, Harry was a school teacher. As mentioned under the notes for Ruth's husband, Harry Weir, after Ruth's death he married Ila Vrooman. Since Ila's sister Josie was a flower girl at Ruth's wedding it seems likely that the cousinly connection had been maintained for a very long time. It's a guess, but Ruth and Ila, along with been cousins, were probably good friends. Certainly there would have been a professional element to their friendship, for they were both registered nurses. |
