| Note | Henrietta's parents were Samuel Smith, born Wales, and farming in Brant Township in Bruce County and his wife Lavinia Buchanan, daughter of William Buchanan and Jane Maria Griffith of North Dumfries. William Buchanan was the son of John Buchanan and Margaret McArthur who, with William, settled in Dumfries Township in 1817 in the Branchton area. Lavinia's brother, Smith Buchanan, was married to Martha Main, half sister to Caroline Main, the wife of Elam Vrooman, son of Arents. Henrietta's marriage registration indicates that at the time of the marriage she was residing in West Garafraxa. We cannot know with certainty, but she may have been living with and working for Caroline and Elam Vrooman. In any event, it seems reasonable that the Main family was the connection. We may note that in the 1871 census, Henrietta was enumerated twice - once with her parents in Brant Township, Bruce County, and once with her grandparents, William and Jane Buchanan, in 'South Waterloo', actually North Dumfries Township. The farm was at Branchton. Death reg. 035788-31 Fergus, Nichol Twp., Wellington County Henrietta Ellis, died at Fergus on Oct. 19, 1931. Widowed. Born at Hanover July 14, 1858. Age 72 yrs., 3 mos., 5 days. Resided 13 years at place of death. Parents Samuel Smith, born Wales, Lavina Buchanan, born Galt, Ontario. Informant Leslie Ellis of Fergus, son. Burial Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus, on 21 October, 1931. On May 14, 1902, a baby boy Ellis was born at concession 3, lot 18, in West Garafraxa. The child lived three hours and no name is provided. The informant is shown as Ella E. Ellis. Whose child this was isn't clear. |
