Note | State and Federal census information provides us with Elias' place of birth as Canada. There can be no doubt with such information that we have that he was the son of George L. Vrooman and Margaret Bolton. The 1870 census has pages for deaths during the year ending June 1, 1870. This shows Elias' death clearly in Jefferson County, Nebraska. The locale is badly written, but might be Big Ranch Precinct. The place of Elias' death and place of burial, however, is taken from Vermicie's pension petition. It simply shows that Elias, age 35, born Canada and who worked on a farm, was murdered in August of the previous year. The cause of death was first written as 'shot', then stroked out and the word 'murdered' written in. Under the above details is written in 'Antelope Precinct' and this appears to relate to Elias' place of death. Elias' wife Vermicie Jane did not apply for a pension until 1906, decades after Elias' death. The papers of pension application, with confirming documentation, tell a tragic story and this is detailed in the notes for Jane. |
