Ingersoll, Oxford County David Vrooman, 37, widower, general agent, born Canada, residing Strathroy. Parents Adam and Elizabeth Vrooman. Baptist. Note | David appears with his parents in Moulton Township, Haldimand County, in the 1851 census. He is mentioned as the husband of Catherine Vrooman in the Orlo Miller index of Nash-Lockwood Cemetery. Catherine died in November of 1869, so the stone was presumeably made in 1870. We next find David, a widower, with his children in Strathroy at the time of the 1871 census. There, his children are all shown as born in Canada. This is not correct, for at least some in other records are shown as born in the United States. We must assume that the family was either in the United States at the time of the U.S. census of 1860 or the Canadian census of 1861, or in the process of travel. There is a record of a David N. Vrooman purchasing land in Dodge County, Minnesota, on August 2, 1860. As mentioned, David appears in the 1871 census at Strathroy, Middlesex County, Ontario. He is still there in the 1881 census. By 1891, David is living in Barrie, Simcoe County, Ontario. Two things may have contributed to his move. According to the History of Middlesex County, 1889, Goodspeed Publishers, Toronto & London, page 429: On April 30, 1885, David Vrooman's dwelling was destroyed on Colborne street. Unquote. This one sentence report occurs in the chapter on Strathroy. The other matter that provided David with some difficulty was of a legal nature. A hardware dealer in Bruce County brought a complaint of 'false pretences' against David and three other persons relating to copper lightening rods. The file is on microfilm at the Archives of Ontario, but at the time of microfilming much of the file was too faded to discern the outcome. Death reg. 035019-18 Barrie, Simcoe County. David Vrooman, age 84 years, 9 months, died February 20, 1918, born United States (not correct). Place of death, Barrie, Ontario. Place of burial, Strathroy. Laborer. Widowed. Father Adam Vrooman; mother's maiden name unknown. Informant Mrs. E. Harrison, 425 William St., London, Ontario. David's death registration places his burial in Strathroy Cemetery. A transcription of the cemetery provided by the Middlesex County Branch of the OGS does not show his name. Three of his children with Helen are buried there. |
