William Pearson, 27, bachelor, farmer, born Hamilton, residing Windham. Parents Charles Pearson and Arabella Pearson. Catherine Butler, 18, spinster, born Woodhouse, residing Lynnville. Parents George and Maria Butler. The name of the first witness is faded and illeg. The second witness appears to be Joel Fonger of Lynnville. They were married by D.V. Lucas on 14 November 1869 at Windham. The religious denomination for both the bride and groom is shown as non professor. They were married by license. Such birth information as we have for Catherine indicates that she may have been rather younger than 18 at the time she married. |
Death | She died on 17 June 1922 at Windham Township at age 68. |
Burial | She was buried on 22 June 1922 at Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe, Norfolk Counthy. |
Note | Catherine's death registration, below, shows her birth as being on September 18th, 1853. The 1901 census in Windham Township shows her birth as being September 10th (or 18th, handwriting questionable) of 1851. Considering that the 1861 census in Windham Township shows her as being age 8, then a birth year of 1853 is the more likely. The question the enumerator of the 1861 census was to ask was: What is your age as of your next birthday? Since the 1861 census was conducted in August of 1861 and Catherine was born in September, then, if indeed the question was answered correctly, then Catherine's age as shown as 8 as of her next birthday (the following month) would indicate that her year of birth was 1853. Catherine shows her age on her marriage registration as 18. Especially considering that son Elmer who was born in January of 1898 and is clearly identified as the son of William and Catherine, a birth year for Catherine of 1853 makes rather more sense, if only because that at the time of Elmer's birth, she will have been 45. Catherine was likely 16 when she married. Given the era, this was not exceptional. Death reg. 022957-22 Windham Twp., Norfolk Co. Catherine Person died June 17, 1922, at Windham Township, Norfolk County. Age 69. Married. Born Sept. 18, 1853, in Windham Township (?). Housewife. Father - Butler, born England. Mother unknown. Physician E. W. Zumstein, Delhi. Informant Mrs. A. W. Moore, 1120 Clark St., Kalamazoo, Michigan. Burial Simcoe on June 20, 1922. The above death registration places Catherine's birth in Windham Township. Her marriage registration, likely the more accurate, places her birth in Woodhouse Township. Catherine's marriage registration shows her parents as George and Maria Butler. Her mother's given name was almost certainly Parnel. |
