Waterloo County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Charles E. Price and Samuel L. Downey, Ministers of the United Brethren in Christ, for the year ending 31st day of December, A.D. 1861. (The list was certified by Samuel L. Downey)

Henry Main, 22, born and residing Beverly. Parents George and Margaret A.
Roxy L. Smith, 20, born and residing Woolwich. Parents Thomas & Sarah Ann.
Witnesses Harriet Woodward and Sydney Senoth (or Sinoth), both of Woolwich.
On April 10, 1861.

The couple may have been married by either of the above mentioned clergymen. Since the list was certified by Samuel Downley (date not given, but probably in January of 1862), Henry and Roxy, being the first in the list, were rather more likely to have been married by Charles Price. The United Brethren had a congregation in Waterloo Township. It isn't clear if they had one in Woolwich Township. They did have one at Sheffield in Beverly Township and it was probably through the church that Henry and Roxy met.

NoteOur first record of Henry Main is the 1861 census in Beverly Township, Wentworth County, in Ontario. He is with his father George Main and his step mother Margaret - likely by this time Margaret Vrooman.

At the time of the 1870 census in Mecosta, Michigan, Henry is present in Millbrook Township with his wife Roxy and their first four children who were born in Canada and their son Lorenzo, who was their first born in Michigan.

In 1880 they are still present in Millbrook Township, their family considerably expanded.

By the time of the 1900 census, 20 years later, Henry is with his second wife Cora Ensign and her children by her first marriage to Henry Caryl.
