ID # 9441, (1828-1904)
BaptismWilliam Vamplew was baptized on 24 March 1828 at England.
MarriageHe married Ann Marie White in 1849 at Lincolnshire, England.
The 1861 census as taken in Collingwood Township of Grey County dates the marriage of William and Ann Marie to 1849. Free BMD tells that the couple was married in England in the first quarter of 1849. The town of registration of the marriage (not necessarily the town of marriage) was Louth in Lincolnshire.

It's clear enough that Ann Marie's maiden name was White and the 1851 census (taken in January of 1852) places the couple in association with Whites in Collingwood Township.

White's Methodist Cemetery in Collingwood Township is apparently that of Ann Marie's family. The first gravestone recorded dates are from 1851 and the earliest one is that of a 21 day old child, Betsy, who died in April of that year. Two of Betsy's siblings, James who died in 1855, and Susan who died in 1858, are buried with her and they are all stated to be the children of William and Maria Vamplew.

Wesleyan Methdodist baptisms have been checked, but Vamplews have not been recorded.

William and Maria have three children with them in the 1861 census and six children with them as of the 1871 census.

The family is shown as Wesleyan Methodist as of the 1861 and 1871 censuses, but as Church of England in the 1881 census. This latter record is probably an enumerator's error, for the 1891 census again shows the family as Methodist.

The Bruce-Grey branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has transcribed the Thornbury-Clarksburg Cemetery in Collingwood Township and here is recorded the Vamplew gravestone for William and Ann Marie.

William's inscription shows his age at time of death as 76 yrs., 7 mos., 18 dys. and Ann Marie's shows her age at time of death as 68 yrs., 3 mos., 21 dys. Their dates of birth have been calculated from this. These calculations may well be correct or rather more approximately so.
