Note | The 1859 Toronto directory shows a James Aiken, laborer, at 196 Elizabeth St. The 1862 directory shows a James Aiken at 196 Elizabeth. The 1867 directory has a James Aiken and Robert Aiken at 238 Terauley. The 1868 directory shows Eliza Aitken, widow, at 238 Terauley. She is not at 238 Terauley in the 1870 directory. The 1870 directory does show Mrs. Aikens, matron, at the Magdalen Asylum. This is on Yonge Street in Yorkville. There was an Eliza Aiken, widow, age 45, born Ireland, in the 1871 Toronto census. She is shown as a matron of the Magdalen Asylum and as a member of the Church of England. The 1872 Toronto City Directory shows Mrs. Aiken as matron at the Magdalene Asylum. Ditto 1873; ditto 1874. The 1875 directory also shows Mrs. Eliza Aiken as the matron at the Magdalen Society, but this time she is shown as well as the widow of James. The 1876, '77, and '78 directories show her as still present at the Magdalen. She is not identifiable in the directories for 1879 or 1880. A Mrs. Spence is the matron at Magdalen Asylum as of the 1881 directory. The 1881 census taken in Galt has Eliza Aiken, age 59, with her son-in-law William McBride and his children. William is shown as a safe maker. See notes for William. The 1901 census in Galt shows Eliza's date of birth to be May 15, 1822. The writing is rather faint. It's entirely possible that she was born on May 18. Death reg. 027115-03 Galt, Waterloo Co. Eliza Aiken died March 19, 1903, age 81. Address not given. Occupation housework. Widow. Presbyterian. Born Ireland. Cause of death old age. Physician and informant J. S. Wardlaw. Per information supplied by the office of St. James Cemetery, Eliza Aiken died in 1903 and is buried in the north grave of lot 82, Section V. An Alice Aiken who died in 1883 is in the south grave of that lot. So far, no record of Eliza's maiden name has been found. |
