Jane Aiken
ID # 8038, (1839-1872)
Father | James Aiken (1815-1868) |
Mother | Eliza (--?--) (1822-1903) |
Birth | Jane Aiken was born in 1839 at Ireland. |
Marriage | She married William McBride, son of Robert McBride and Sophia Dale. William McBride appears with his wife's family, the Aikens, in the 1861 census in Toronto. They have no children with them. Son, William Jr., was born in 1862. Jane's family were Church of England - Anglicans. Anglican clergy were not obliged to return records of marriages to local registrars as of the District era, but it was required by the time county era registrations came into force - around 1857 or 1858. It does seem likely that William and Jane were married in the county era, perhaps two or three years well into the county marriage registration era, but no record of their marriage has been found. All sorts of index and image registrations have been examined, but no marriage registration for William and Jane has been found. The short story will likely be that a church record is to be found, but was not submitted to the registrar. It may yet turn up. |
Death | She died on 14 August 1872 at Toronto, York Co.. |
Burial | She was buried at Sec. V, Lot 064, St. James Anglican Cemetery, Toronto. |
Note | The Aiken family appears in the 1861 census in Toronto and may be readily identified, for W. McBride, carpenter, age 24, is with them. Jane, shown also as a McBride, is age 22. Jane is evidently the daughter of Ja's, Aiken, age 46, and of Eliza Aiken, age 42. Also in the household is an Aiken son, Robert, age 12. The Aiken's, Jane included, are recorded as being Church of England. William is shown as F.C. (Free Church, or Presbyterian). All of them were born in Ireland. The enumerator originally wrote in their counties of birth, some of which are illegible. What is legible is that young Robert was born in Limerick and that the father, Ja's (James) was born in Inneskillen. At some point the enumerator placed in a large X over the birth locations and simply wrote above them 'Ireland'. Yes, it's a mess. The 1871 census shows William and Jane in Toronto East. With them are the four children that we have here listed for them. They are all shown as Canada Presbyterian, though this may not be entirely accurate. It's quite possible that, as per the 1861 census, Jane was still Church of England. Your researcher is informed by St. James Cemetery in Toronto that Jane is buried in the same plot as her father in their Cemetery. They are buried in Section V, lot 64. James Aiken is buried in the center grave; Jane McBride, age 33, and who died August 14, 1872, is buried in the north grave. As well, there is buried with her in the same grave Baby McBride, who died May 10th, 1872. It is not stated whether the infant was male or female. (Death registrations have not been found.) William is in Galt with four surviving children by the time of the 1881 census, but, considering that the infant is buried in Toronto and that Jane was buried there as well, it seems at the least reasonable that Jane and her infant died in Toronto. This tree shows Jane's death as being in Toronto. It may be that she died in Galt or elsewhere, but this seems unlikely. (Toronto city directory information has William McBride in Toronto until at least 1877. He is reasonably identifiable, for he is shown as being employed by John Taylor & Company who were safemakers. When William appears in the 1881 census in Galt, again, he is shown as a safemaker. So, yes, at the time of Jane's passing they were living in Toronto.) (The south grave holds Martha Polly Aiken, daughter of Robert Aiken, who died December 22nd, 1877 at the age of 5 years.) By the time of the 1881 census, William is in Galt with four surviving children, but also present is Eliza Aiken, evidently William Sr's mother-in-law, age 59. She appears to be taking care of the household. The McBride's are shown as Presbyterian, but Eliza Aiken, as with the 1861 census, is shown as being Church of England. Jane's mother, Eliza Aiken (maiden name unknown), was with William McBride Sr., her son-in-law, in Galt, as of the 1881, 1891, and 1901 censuses. She died in Galt in 1903. St. James Cemetery informs that Eliza Aiken is buried in Section V, lot 82, the north grave. An Alice Aiken who died in 1883 is in the south grave of that lot. With the aid of Toronto city directory information, we now know that William McBride, safe maker, was located in Toronto at least as late as 1876. Just possibly, he may have been in Toronto as late as 1878. See notes for William. |
