Page 15, Marriages folemnized in the Parifh of Marston Bigot, in the County of Somerset, in the year 1816

George Philcox of the parifh of Frome and Martha Butler of this parifh were married in this church by licence with confent of parents this seventeenth day of November, 1816
By me, Edward Grime, rector
In the Prefence of Benj. Deacon and James Philcox.

The above marriage was preceded by a marriage bond signed by Benj. Deacon and George Philcox which promised that George Philcox would marry Martha Butler. He is described as being of the Parish of Frome in the County of Somerset and of the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Martha is described as being of the parish of Marston Bigot and of the same diocese as her intended husband. Benjamin Deacon has co-signed the document.

Of particular interest is that George Philcox is described as a watchmaker in this early document. His occupation is not mentioned on the marriage document, but it is mentioned in later census years, making it reasonbly certain that the several documents mentioned refer to the same couple.

NoteMartha Butler Philcox was slightly older than census information would lead us to believe. Her baptism date was February 11, 1794, at Brenzett, Kent. That she was born in Brenzett agrees with her place of birth as shown on her census information.
