Page 15, Marriages folemnized in the Parifh of Marston Bigot, in the County of Somerset, in the year 1816

George Philcox of the parifh of Frome and Martha Butler of this parifh were married in this church by licence with confent of parents this seventeenth day of November, 1816
By me, Edward Grime, rector
In the Prefence of Benj. Deacon and James Philcox.

The above marriage was preceded by a marriage bond signed by Benj. Deacon and George Philcox which promised that George Philcox would marry Martha Butler. He is described as being of the Parish of Frome in the County of Somerset and of the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Martha is described as being of the parish of Marston Bigot and of the same diocese as her intended husband. Benjamin Deacon has co-signed the document.

Of particular interest is that George Philcox is described as a watchmaker in this early document. His occupation is not mentioned on the marriage document, but it is mentioned in later census years, making it reasonbly certain that the several documents mentioned refer to the same couple.

NoteThe 1841 census for England shows George and Martha Philcox in the Parish of St. Saviour in the borough of Southwark and residing on Southwark Square. This shows George as age 45 and Martha as age 46. George is shown as a watchmaker, which agrees with information on his marriage bond. With them are children:

Susan, age 22
George and Sarah C., both age 20 (twins?)
Martha, age 17.

The 1851 census has the couple in the Parish of St. George the Martyr in Southwark, Surrey. The reside at 45 Great Suffolk Street. George is shown as age 55 and Martha as 54. George is shown as a 'chronometer maker' and his place of birth is shown as Ashbury, Kent. Martha's place of birth is shown as Brenzett, Kent. With them are children:

Susan Shaw, age 27, place of birth Frome, Somerset.
Martha Philcox, 24, miliner, place of birth Canterbury, Kent.

The 1861 census shows George and Martha at 5 Howard Street, St. Marys, Reading, Berkshire. They are both shown as age 65. Their places of birth agree with the 1851 census. With them is daugter Martha Kenner, age 32. As with the 1851 census, her place of birth is shown as Canterbury. George is shown as a P.H.S. Chronometer maker.

The 1871 census has the couple at 7 Lower Smith Street, in Clerkenwell, Middlesex. They are both shown as age 75. Daughter Martha is still with them, though her name is shown as Philcox. Their places of birth are shown as being essentially the same as in previous census years. George is shown with a rather lengthier profession which begins with the word 'chronometer', but the remainder is illegible.

George and Martha have yet to be found in the 1881 census and so what follows is counterintuitive.

FreeBMD, a website for searching the indexing for births, marriages, and deaths in England, shows a Martha Philcox dying at age 86 in the 4th quarter of 1881 at Barnet in Hertfordshire. This same site shows George Philcox dying at age 89 in the 4th quarter of 1883, also in Barnet. Is this George Philcox the watchmaker and his wife Martha, formerly Butler? As mentioned above, they have not been found in the 1881 census. At a guess FreeBMD is correct, but...if so, where were they as of the 1881 census. George was probably a man of means. Did they spend the time frame of the 1881 census in...say...Monte Carlo?
