MS248 reel 17, Vol. 76, page 25 Waterloo County Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by M. MacKenzie, a minister of the Canada Presbyterian Church, for the year ended the 31st day of December, A.D. 1865 (Not filed with the county registrar until 11th Feby., 1867) Joseph Kinzie, 27, born and residing Waterloo Township. Parents John Kinzie and Elizabeth Moxley. Emma Hamilton, 24, Born London, England, residing Waterloo Township. Parents Thos. Hamilton and Emma Stanton. Witnesses Thos. Hamilton and Emma Stanton, both of Waterloo. On January 12, 1865. The above does have the look, correct or not, of the marriage being witnessed by the bride's parents. The Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society published a record of baptisms at the (apparently) twin charge of the Doon and Hespeler Presbyterian churches. This does not have the look of a complete record, though the Society will have recorded the available records. It is evident that Rev. Malcom MacKenzie did baptisms at almost certainly both churches and, in which event, probably married Joseph and Emma at the Doon Church. The county marriage records are not usually clear as to where a marriage was performed. Perhaps a church record would tell the tale. These, for the moment, are unavailable to your researcher. |
Note | Emma Hamilton's baptism is taken from page 47 of the baptism book for the year of 1840 for St. Mary Newington in the County of Surrey. Ancestry takes this from a database provided by the London Metropolitan Archives and is entitled London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1920. This date Emma's birth to August 7, 1840, and her baptism to September 2nd. The family reside at 2 Carter Street and the father is a mariner. The 1841 census shows mother Emma Hamilton in St. Mary Newington in the borough of Lambeth. With her is daughter Emma, age 4 months, as well as a Mary Austin, age 15. That father Thomas isn't present is reasonable, for the baptism shows him as a mariner and he is probably away at sea. By the time of the 1851 census in Canada West (January of 1852), Emma is with her parents, Thomas and Emma, in Waterloo Township. She has four siblings. If the ages and places of birth for her siblings are stated correctly, her family came to Canada between 1844 and 1846. By this time, Emma's father is shown as a farmer. It would seem that his mariner days were over. Looking over the names in the 1851 census as well as supplementary entries on statistical pages, it does appear that the family was located not far from the village of Doon. They were likely known to the Kinsey/Kinzie family. As it happens, Emma's parents, Thomas and Emma, are buried in Doon Presbyterian Cemetery, per a transcription done by the Waterloo branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Thomas died in April of 1861 and Emma, his wife, died in 1894. |
