Wellington County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. John Douse, a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church for the year ending 31st December, 1859.

Ruben Chapman Curry MD, 29, born Hallowell (Twp.), residing Guelph. Parents William and Harriet Hill Curry.
Ann Jackson, her age lost in fold of page, born and residing Guelph. Parents John and Esther Jackson.
Witnesses William Curry of Hallowell and Jenny Richardson of Guelph.
On March 9, 1859.

At first glance, Reuben's place of birth appears to be Holland. A closer look at the handwriting makes it clear that it was Hallowell, which was a township in, at that time, the Prince Edward District. Later, this was Prince Edward County.

Reuben's death registration shows his place of birth as Picton, which was a town in Hallowell.

DeathHe died on 16 May 1906 at Guelph, Wellington Co, Ontario, at age 77.
BurialHe was buried at Sec. E, Woodland Cemetery, Guelph.
NoteReuben's death registration tells that he was born in Picton, Ontario. This is located in Hallowell Township in Prince Edward County. His marriage registration places his birth in Hallowell Township and this seems likely to be rather the more accurate. His marriage registration tells that his parents were William and Harriet Curry and the 1851 shows this couple in Hallowell with twelve children. Reuben is not listed among them, but it seems reasonable that he would be away for his education.

Reuben and Annie were married in 1859 and he is shown as a medical doctor on the form. The couple were located in Port Hope, Durham County, as of the 1861 census and, again, he is shown as a medical doctor.

The 1871 and 1881 censuses have them in Eramosa Township of Wellington County.

The 1891 and 1901 censuses show them to be in Toronto.

He died in Guelph in 1906 and is buried in Woodland Cemetery, Guelph.

Reuben's date of birth, 28 December, 1828, is taken from the 1901 census in Toronto.
