The bride and groom were apparently able to sign their names, though this isn't directly evident on the form. Other marriages on the form do indicate when the bride and groom signed with an X. The witnesses shown are Esther Cosens and Chas. Cosens. |

| Note | Jane Cosens Tilt's gravestone dates her death to October 17, 1832, and tells that she was in her 28th year. Her baptism was on September 22, 1806. Familysearch presents a database England, Hampshire Bishop's Transcripts 1680-1892, and in this her parents are noted as Charles and Ann Cosens. The gravestone may be correct, which would suggest that Jane was born before her parents marriage, but it seems likely that she was born thereafter and her birth year is shown here as 1806. Another problem. William and Jane Tilt, both shown as age 27 in 1832 are in a list of Petworth Emigrants that sailed on the same ship as Jane's brother Charles and her parents with a number of children who are siblings of Jane and Charles. William and Jane are shown with three children at time of embarkation: John, age 7; William, age 5; and Jane, age 3 months. Young William and Jane in later years have been found. Later records for John are being sought. It seems fair to wonder if John, age 7, was a son of William's by a previous marriage. A difficulty with this is that when William Tilt married Jane Cosens, the marriage record shows him to be a bachelor. There is certainly a problem with the age of daughter Jane at time of embarkation (see her notes). |
