Age 87 yrs., 4 mos., 19 dys. Farmer. Residence at place of death 13 years. Resident of Canada 72 years. Father Christopher Clemenhagen, born Germany, mother's name not known, but born Germany. Physician's name almost illegible, but may be Geo. A. McGibbon of Alma. Informant Mrs. J. E. Farrelly, R. R. 1, Alma, Ont., daughter. Burial Sept 2nd, 1930, at Elora Cemetery. Frederick's year of birth is shown in this tree as 1843. His year of birth is shown as 1843 on his death registration, on his gravestone in Elora Cemetery, and on the 1901 census in Hagerman Township in what is described as Muskoka & Parry Sound District. (His full date of birth as it appears in the 1901 census, April 11, 1843, agrees with his death registration.) That said, Frederick was probably rather younger. Frederick and Charlotte's marriage registration shows him to be 25 and she to be 30. As they were married in 1873, this would place Charlotte's year of birth to 1843 and this agrees with her death registration and the 1901 census. It also agrees with her age of 9 in the 1851 census. (The 1851 census was begun in January of 1852 and the age question asked the person's age as of their next birthday, so a birth year for Charlotte of 1843 would be correct.) Frederick's year of birth per his age, 25 years, as it appears on their marriage registration in September of 1873, would place his year of birth to approximately 1848. Also, Frederick was enumerated with his parents in the 1871 census, begun on April 2, at Mulgrave, Ottawa East, Quebec, and his age is shown as 22. According to an endorsement on the previous page, the Clemenhagen family was enumerated in this census on approximately April 5th or 6th, but still prior to Frederick's birthday, so age 22 may be correct. At worst, it will be approximate. That his year of birth was 1848 is probably correct, or nearly so. The only census year wherein Frederick's age is shown a bit younger than that of Charlotte is the 1881 census where he is shown as 35 and she as 37. All of which may seem like a quibble, but a correct year of birth may assist in locating birth information for Frederick in Germany. More and more of such information is now available. By way of example see the Hespeler family that also appears in this tree. The 1901 census has it that the Clemenhagen family came to Canada in 1853. They have not been found in the 1861 census, but are in the Township of Mulgrave in East Ottawa, Quebec. Fred is with his parents Christopher and Lena, both shown as age 60. With them is brother Albert, age 28. For the moment, we do no know if there were more siblings. |
