MS248 reel 2, Vol. 12, page 70 Home District Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. Ludwick Kribs, Congregational minister at Stouffville, County of York, between 5 March, 1849, and 4 March, 1850. On Dec. 31st, 1849 Obed Widdifield, 21, of Uxbridge and Emeline Hamilton, 16, of Uxbridge By Publishment (Banns) Witnesses Alfred Hambleton and Anna Widdifield. The above marriage registration shows the bride as a Hamilton and one of the witnesses as a Hambleton. The research here isn't perfect, but an initial look at the available records suggests that the bride's name was really Hambleton. The residence of the witnesses is not shown. |
| Death | She died on 30 August 1907 at Whitchurch Twp., York County, at age 75. |
| Burial | She was buried at Pine Orchard Friends Cemetery, Whitchurch Twp., York Co.. |
| Note | As mentioned in the marriage notes, Emaline's maiden name, which is shown as Hamilton in her marriage registration, was Hambleton. Society of Friends' records show her as Hambleton in regards to her marriage. Her parentage remains to be more thoroughly researched, but, initially, it does appear that she was the daughter of John and Jane Hambleton who appear in the 1851 census in Uxbridge Township, Ontario County (now a part of the Durham Region). An Alfred Hambleton appears in the household of John and Jane in 1851 and he was probably one of the witnesses at their marriage. The household family members were all Society of Friends (Quakers). If a record of Emaline's birth exists in the Society of Friends' records, it has yet to be found. Emaline's death registration shows her birth as being in Uxbridge - this should be Uxbridge Township, as opposed to the village. The Alfred Hambleton who was a witness at Emaline and Obed's marriage was almost certainly the son of John and Jane who appears in the 1851 census in Uxbridge Township. Alfred is in this household. There was another Alfred Hambleton who died at a rather young age and who lived in Huron County and who is buried in Brussels Cemetery. It seems unlikely that he would be the Alfred Hambleton who was witness to Emaline and Obed's marriage. A border-line glorious confusion: Per a researcher on Find-a-Grave there are two cemeteries in Uxbridge near to each other. One is the Friends Cemetery and the other is Quaker Hill Cemetery. They are both on Concession Road 6 in present day Durham County. The Friends Cemetery is located south of Durham Region Road 8, while Quaker Hill is located to the north. (And thanks to the Find-a-Grave researcher for sorting this out, for she has visited both sites.) Here's where the confusion comes in The Oshawa-Whitby branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has done a transcription of Quaker Hill Cemetery and has John and Jane Hambleton buried therein. The trouble is that the photos of the gravestones list them in Friends Cemetery, not Quaker Hill, and this appears to apply to the whole transcription. If this is correct, then...where is the real transcription for Quaker Hill? Civil and first-hand comments are always appreciated. Death reg. 034410-07 Whitchurch Twp., York Co. Emeline Widdifield died August 30th, 1907. Age 75 and 2 months. Residence lot 30, concession 5. Housewife. Married, husbands name Obed Widdifield. Born Uxbridge. Religious denomination Friends.
