Home District Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. Ludwick Kribs, Congregational minister at Stouffville, County of York, between 5 March, 1849, and 4 March, 1850.

On Dec. 31st, 1849
Obed Widdifield, 21, of Uxbridge and
Emeline Hamilton, 16, of Uxbridge

Witnesses Alfred Hambleton and Anna Widdifield.

The above marriage registration shows the bride as a Hamilton and one of the witnesses as a Hambleton. The research here isn't perfect, but an initial look at the available records suggests that the bride's name was really Hambleton.

The residence of the witnesses is not shown.

At first glance, that Obed Widdifield was born in Pennsylvania seems dubious, but may in fact be right. The 1871 census in Whitchurch does place Obed's birth in the United States. The Biographical Record of York County tells how his father, William Widdifield, was in Yarmouth after his marriage (probably Yarmouth Township in what became Elgin County), but then moved to near Uxbridge. The biography goes on to tell that not long thereafter he sold up in Canada and went to the United States (where not said). When he was required to take an oath of allegiance, he returned to Canada. His refusal is not explained, but may have to do with his being a member of the Society of Friends (a Quaker).
