Elizabeth Mulholland

ID # 7725, (1820-1853)
BirthElizabeth Mulholland was born on 22 May 1820.
MarriageShe married Peter Willson, son of Obed Willson and Hannah Vasbinder, in 1840.
Warner & Beers biography for Peter Martin in their 1883 History of the County of Brant, state that Peter married Elizabeth Mulholland in 1840. Some confirmation of this has been found in the form of a marriage bond between Peter and Elizabeth dated October 17, 1840. This was witnessed by Levi Willson and Morris Miller. The original images may be found on Library and Archives Canada's website or on microfilm C-6790.

Note that the date of the marriage bond will not be the date of the marriage. This remains unknown.

DeathShe died on 18 June 1853 at Brant County at age 33.
BurialShe was buried at Troy Cemetery, Beverly Twp. Wentworth Co..
NoteOur information for Elizabeth Mulholland, the wife of Peter Willson, is limited. Warner & Beers 1883 History of the County of Brant, on pages 611-612, has a biography of Peter Wilson. This tells that his first wife was Elizabeth Mulholland, born 'near Beverly'. It tells that she and Peter were married in 1840 (the Gore District's marriage register for this time period has not survived) and that she died in 1851 in Brant County.

According to a transcription of Troy Cemetery in Beverly Township done by Harley Misener in 1969 and one done by the Hamilton branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1990 (revised 2004), as well as one done by Murray Fair in 2001 for Interment.net, Elizabeth died on 18 June 1853. The inscription on her gravestone tells that she was the wife of Peter and that she died at age 33 years and 27 days. All three transcriptions agree. Her date of birth, shown here as 22 May 1820, is calculated from her age as it appears on her gravestone. This may be approximate.

There are numbers of Mulhollands buried in Troy cemetery, which will be the occasion for her burial here as well. What we do not have explained is her parentage.

Elizabeth is buried beside her son George A. Willson, who died at age 8 years, 3 months, and 15 days, on April 4, 1852.

A note here.

Agewise, Elizabeth was probably the daughter of Hugh Mulholland and Mary Wedge. The Christian Guardian has obituaries for both (see Rev. Donald McKenzie's Vol 5, Death Notices from the Christian Guardian, 1858-1872, Global Heritage Press of Milton, now in Ottawa, page 215). In Hugh's obituary it is clearly stated that he was married to Mary Wedge. Harley Misener's transcription of Troy Cemetery, 1969, tells, with a question mark, that Hugh was married to Mary Able. This is not correct.

Hugh Mulholland's obituary tells that he had a 'number of sons and daughters'. His wife Mary's obituary tells that they had 12 children.

The Warner & Beers biography for Peter Willson tells that Elizabeth died in 'Brant County, but that she was born 'near Beverly'. She is buried in Troy Cemetery in Beverly Township and since the cemetery contains a veritable host of Mulhollands it seems likely that further research will show her to be the daughter of Hugh and Mary.
